Artists We’re Spinning: Y La Bamba
I first heard Y La Bamba in the summer of 2018 and their records have been spinning on high since then. I started with 2016’s Ojos Del Sol and wandered my way back through their catalog until Mujeres caught my attention—and kept it.
Y La Bamba presents a sonic mix of cultures you, perhaps, had no idea you needed to hear. They’re the kind of band that makes you wonder why, aside from family ties, you bothered to learn French. They inspire an openness about the world around you. Their internal struggle, frustration, and sublime beauty bleed through complex songs. At times all is stripped away, leaving an earnest vibrato above a simple acoustic progression. Bandleader Luz Elena Mendoza brings her ethereal voice and intimate lyrics straight to you, especially in the new album, Mujeres. The album continues their journey with classic chorused guitar, a dynamic range of material, and unexpected harmonies. Also at the base of Y La Bamba is their rhythmic intelligence. They never disappoint in their exploration of polyrhythms, song development, and compassionately curated melodic lines—they exist in the world unlike anything I have ever enjoyed.
Get a taste of their sound below and see you there on Friday!
My Death – A wonderful live performance like we’ll see this week.
Ojos del Sol – One of the most unassuming and beautiful explorations in song I have ever heard!
Juniper – The older song shows Y la Bamba’s persistence in the sublime.
Kali – A more recent piece showcasing Luz and the band’s growing musical prowess.
