The other day, while reading the New York Times, I came across an article about the giving the gift of experience. They made the case that instead of giving material objects, people should give gifts that create memories. This article has been a hot topic of conversation with the staff here at The Music Hall, as we are in the business of creating magical memories and getting ready for Beauty and the Beast to grace our historic stage.Read More

Today we had our first School Day’s Series show of our season. This is by far the most adorable programming that we have here at The Music Hall. For just $6 local elementary students come see their favorite books come to life on the Historic Theater’s stage. I love watching all of the kids come in to the theater, some of them for the very first time, dressed in their very best outfits, all bursting with excitement that only a field trip can bring. Looking down from the balcony it always reminds me of a little ant farm watching all of the kids wiggling around in their seats, so excited to see the show.Read More

This year, as I pulled my Telluride by the Sea staff shirt out, it occurred to me, TbtS weekend is like summer camp. People come from all over the place to spend the weekend watching movies here in Portsmouth that only a handful of other people have seen. Then we all get to talk about them, what we liked, what we hated, what we’re looking forward to, I mean who knew Emma Stone could sing and dance?Read More

The driving force behind the creation of our #MyMusicHall, video series has been my boss, Monte Bohanan, our Director of Marketing. When I was putting together a list of possible subjects, it only seemed natural that he would be one of them. I love hearing his stories about what The Music Hall was like when he first started here and how it’s changed over the 17 years he’s been working here. After some sweet talking, he agreed to tell his story.

The Music Hall’s Writers Series intern, Shannon, along with Kait Smith (Content Marketing and Copywriting Associate) and Margaret Talcott (Producer, Writers on a New England Stage and Writers in the Loft) meets with Lauren Weisberger at The Music Hall Loft.
Today, as I sat to write my blog, I was reminded that it’s the first day of school for most kids. My Facebook is full of adorable pictures of kids in their new outfits, my teacher friends are all back on their normal schedules, and UNH students have moved back in. I’m very lucky to get to take advantage of the our partnership with UNH through some fantastic interns, and this past year, we as an organization, have had an all star lineup of interns.Read More

Eleven year old Noah Ades, a student at Portsmouth Music and Arts (PMAC) for the past two years, is sitting in the lobby of The Music Hall historic theater with a group of his fellow students on the afternoon of Saturday July 30. They are eagerly waiting to meet jazz superstar and tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington, who is visiting with his band between performances at the Newport Jazz Festival. After chatting with Washington, the students are going upstairs to listen to the band’s sound-check as they prepare for a concert that evening.Read More

When I first started working at The Music Hall, the first thing that really struck me was the pride of ownership people felt about the theater. Whether it was from the staff members who had worked here for dozens of years or members of the community who grew up going to movies and shows, everyone had a unique but fascinating story. As we were talking about this in the marketing department we thought it would be fun to hear other people’s stories about what The Music Hall means to them, why they became a member, why they’ve worked here for 15 years, why they choose to partner with us.Read More

Saturday morning, June 25, 2016. I deliver a bag of food to The Music Hall Historic Theater, watching in awe as throngs of people do the same: a mom and her teenaged son from Eliot, Maine, a young family arriving on bicycles, a local businessman with his SUV trunk full of packed groceries. It’s the second year that The Music Hall has partnered with the Seacoast Family Food Pantry to fill every seat in the hall with food for its Summer Meals 4 Kids program—and this year, it’s also the date of a Music Hall Community Open House with complimentary historic and tech tours of the 1878 theater, selfie photo ops up on stage, and a free afternoon family movie.Read More
