Sitting in a coffee shop in Portsmouth earlier this week I was discussing our upcoming Let’s Talk About Poverty event with the panelists, Beth Mattingly Director of Research on Vulnerable Families at The University of New Hampshire’s (UNH) Carsey School of Public Policy, Kristy Martino, from Results.org, Deborah Anthony, Executive Director of Seacoast Family Food Pantry, and Craig Welch, Executive Director of the Portsmouth Housing Authority. The topics: what each of these four panelists would be presenting; how the event was going to work; how we were going to talk about what can seem like an overwhelming problem, and how we can take action. We talked for over an hour and a half about everything from causes to challenges, from simple fixes to systemic problems.Read More

This week, I opened up my mailbox and found a letter from The Music Hall that didn’t come from my department. It was my yearly reminder to renew my membership. As I wrote my check, I got to thinking about what it means to me to be a member.Read More

Ashleigh Tucker Pollock and I got a chance to take an icy dip in the Atlantic this afternoon with the road crew from Warren Miller. The crew, Dan Ohnsman, Sid Howard, Andrew Parker, and Colin Barry spend their fall on the road doing the great work of getting everyone excited about the ski season that is coming downhill at us fast.
Monte & Ashleigh post-plunge.
While they are in town, they are not just here for the show. The Portsmouth Polar Plunge is also a food drive for The Rotary Club Thanksgiving Dinner. Every year this crew spends their Thanksgiving on the Seacoast away from their families. While many folks would hole up in their hotel, or pine for the mountains or home, they volunteer their time at the Turkey Dinner. And they have done this without fanfare for the last three years. We are so grateful for a fun bunch that also gives back. Thanks guys!
Catch Warren Miller Chasing Shadows on the big screen tonight, Wednesday Nov. 25 at 6 or 9pm. More info/tickets

The weather is supposed to be delightful (sorry can’t help the holiday music puns) this weekend making it the perfect weekend to get outside and celebrate Plaid Friday. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Plaid Friday, it’s the small business version of Black Friday. Where the focus is supporting local stores instead of just shopping at the big box stores. “Tiger Saw has been around in one form or another since the summer of 1999. They’ve played shows all over the world, and have made several albums. Some albums were made in really nice recording studios, and some were made in living rooms with a computer and a couple mics. The last Tiger Saw album, Nightingales, released in 2010, was recorded in at least six different locations, in homes from Portsmouth to Stockholm, Sweden. The writing and recording processes have always proven to be long, and it’s an understatement to say that each album has all been labored over,” says bandleader, Dylan Metrano. Our Deputy Director of Programming Thérèse LaGamma caught up with Dylan Metrano from Tiger Saw to talk about life on the road, growing up on the seacoast, and what lead him to pursue music.Read More

Monte & Denise Wheeler look out over the 5 tons of food collected for the Seacoast Family Food Pantry at the Summer’s Fill the Hall Food Drive.
For me, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing and getting to know the broad array of artists that we are fortunate enough to work with. Artists that are internationally renowned, local, regional, new, or new to me. With the addition of the Loft almost five years ago, we have been able to program even more local and regional talent. I am always excited to discover new music and meet the artists. My job puts me in a unique position to do that just about every week.Read More

I find myself writing, tweeting, and instagraming a lot about how much I love The Music Hall and Portsmouth. One of the many reasons why I love both Portsmouth and TMH so much is the people that work to ensure both are the perfect blend of charm, grit, and quaintness. Tomorrow morning the dedicated members of the Scarecrows of the Port committee will be placing scarecrows around town, signaling the start of our Halloween season to the tourists. For the locals however, the real kick off happened on Monday night when The Portsmouth Halloween Parade announced their Grand Marshal, who happens to be TMH’s Director of Marketing, Monte Bohanan.
