Music Hall Film Club: See and be Seen with a Screen
Our current series, “Great Comics Make Great Comedies”, looks at six decades of America’s funniest movies, each one starring a comic legend, from the immortals of the silent era to Groucho Marx, from Marilyn Monroe to Steve Martin. As host I try to offer a broad palette in the commentary before each film: a little geekiness, a little historical perspective, a little People magazine backstage dish. How did Harold Lloyd actually film the amazing stunts in “Safety Last!”? Why did Mussolini ban the Marx Brothers in Italy? What happened when the stars of THE PRODUCERS, Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, met for the first time? And there may be surprises: cartoons and shorts, quiz prizes, special guests. We like to mix, and mix it up.
For two plus hours, we speak Film, which truly is a universal language. In the hip and stimulating Loft, strangers become friends, rub elbows – and thanks to the amenity of the Loft bar bend them as well! – forming a warm community, all of us basking in the glow from the silver screen.
