The Green Initiative Gains More Welcome Changes
It may seem like there’s always something new at The Music Hall, whether that be up-and-coming artists, community outreach programs, or even Chestnut Street out front. One change we hope you notice is the progress made with our green initiatives. One of the most noticeable developments is our switch from single-use, plastic straws to strawless, reusable souvenir cups. (We do still offer compostable straws “on demand” for those that either require or prefer to use one.) This fantastic first step toward sustainability got us off on the right foot with the rest of our green initiatives.
Until recently, our green practices incorporated state-of-the-art and energy-efficient lights and windows in our buildings, recycling receptacles for plastic bottles and other materials, and environmental awareness programming. But now, we’ve expanded further into the organization with Concessions going green and adding composting with Mr. Fox Composting. Currently, all but one item passed over the Concessions counter has a proper place in the green initiative—candy wrappers remain the only piece of trash. This move ensures we are doing our part for the environment and the community around us. Our patrons join us in this endeavor with little change to their usual practices by simply helping us sort into the right bin. We cut a lot of the environment-harming decisions to make this easy for everyone.
In addition to adding composting, we’ve switched to a soda gun system in the Historic Theater, which means we are cutting down significantly on plastic. We incorporated Bluedrop Water’s beautiful fountain system, eliminating the use of 22,000 single-use plastic bottles a year! And the water tastes incredibly refreshing! We also swapped all of our bottled beer to aluminum cans, which are significantly easier on the environment than glass. Our partnership with Sustainable Seacoast, who helped orchestrate all of these changes, has been incredibly effective and smooth. We are lucky to have the organization guiding us through these transitions.
Keep an eye out for more to come, such as cutting back on more environment-harming products, eliminating our trash output, and utilizing more sustainable practices throughout The Music Hall. So, next time you see a show, grab a cup of still or sparkling water in a compostable cup and know that you are doing your part for the world.
