The Heroin Effect
This month, that movie, aptly named The Heroin Effect, will have its first community screening at our Historic Theater. This locally produced documentary, takes a hard look at the national crisis. Featuring people who are in in long-term recovery programs, as well as a man’s video diary about his daily struggles to find ways to not just become sober, but to stay sober and clean. This movie shows some of the many faces of addiction and recovery, as well as how it impacts their day to day life and the lives of the people around them.
Through the subjects of this documentary, we learn that while this has become a scary epidemic, with 144 people dying from a heroin overdose every day in America, there is hope for a solution. The best way to combat this problem is to have an open dialogue, not just about drugs, but how as a culture we view addicts and treat addiction. This shift in the way people think will allow us to focus on the solutions to this epidemic, as opposed to what created the problem.
We are humbled to be the first community screening of the Heroin Effect on Thursday, March 30. For us here at The Music Hall, we pride ourselves on being a place where conversations about difficult topics like this can take place, We hope that you’ll join us after the film for a panel discussion and Q&A with the filmmakers, subjects of the film, and local treatment specialist. The key to fighting this epidemic lies in bringing people together and facilitating an honest and open conversation.
