March’s Speaker: Joanna Kelley: The Tension of Walking the Line
Jo Kelley, Assistant Mayor of Portsmouth, is the first Black person to be elected to Portsmouth City Council and the first Black Assistant Mayor in the State of NH. She is also the owner of Cup of Joe cafe & bar in downtown Portsmouth.
Having grown up with her grandparents and as a ward of the state, Jo is determined to make sure everyone has access to a fair future. Jo’s passion for non-profit and advocacy work is demonstrated through her service as a Board Member for organizations such as Seacoast African American Culture Center, Strawbery Banke Museum, and 603 Forward Foundation and as Founder and President of the New England BIPOC Cultural Festival.
In her CreativeMorningsPKX talk, The Tension of Walking the Line, Jo shares her two distinct and parallel identities—one rooted in the White world that raised her, the other in the Black world she feels belonging in – and her story of navigating an existence in the space between.
